How to Choose the Right University: Beyond Rankings

Rankings aren't everything. Learn the 7 factors that actually matter when picking a university.

The Rankings Trap

University rankings (QS, THE, Shanghai) are useful starting points but they're heavily influenced by research output, which has little impact on your undergraduate or master's education quality. A university ranked #200 might have a better program in your specific field than one ranked #50. Rankings also don't account for factors that directly affect your experience — campus culture, industry connections, location, and post-graduation employment support.

The 7 Factors That Actually Matter

  1. 1Program Curriculum & Specialization — Does the program offer the specific courses, electives, and research areas you're interested in? A general 'Computer Science' program at one university might be very different from another.
  2. 2Industry Connections & Internships — Does the university have strong partnerships with companies in your target industry? Check if they offer co-op programs, career fairs, and guaranteed internship placements.
  3. 3Location & Job Market — Universities in or near major cities and industry hubs give you access to more internships, part-time jobs, and networking events. Consider the local job market in your field.
  4. 4Alumni Network — A strong alumni network is one of the most underrated factors. Alumni can provide mentorship, job referrals, and industry insights. Check LinkedIn to see where graduates end up.
  5. 5Financial Aid & ROI — Compare total cost (tuition + living) against average post-graduation salary and employment rate. A cheaper university with strong employment outcomes offers better ROI than an expensive one with average outcomes.
  6. 6Class Size & Faculty Access — Smaller class sizes mean more personal attention from professors. Check the student-to-faculty ratio and whether professors (not just teaching assistants) teach undergraduate courses.
  7. 7Student Support Services — International student offices, academic tutoring, mental health services, accommodation assistance, and career counselling. These services can make or break your experience, especially in your first year.

How to Research Universities Effectively

  • Read the actual program curriculum — not just the program description. Download the course catalog and check which courses are mandatory vs. elective.
  • Contact current students — most universities have student ambassador programs. Ask about their genuine experience, not the marketing-speak.
  • Check employment statistics — look for the 'Graduate Outcomes' report. What percentage of graduates found relevant employment within 6 months?
  • Visit campus virtually — Google Maps Street View, YouTube campus tours, and virtual open days can give you a real sense of the environment.
  • Use StudyFar's Compare feature — compare up to 3 universities side-by-side on factors that matter to you.
lightbulbPro Tip

Make a weighted spreadsheet. List your top 5 factors, assign weights (e.g., Curriculum: 30%, Location: 20%, Cost: 25%, Alumni: 15%, Support: 10%), score each university on a 1–10 scale, and let the math guide your decision alongside your intuition.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • No accreditation or questionable accreditation — always verify on the country's official accreditation body website.
  • Vague employment statistics or none published at all.
  • Excessive reliance on recruitment agents over direct admissions.
  • Very low entry requirements combined with high tuition — this is often a sign of a 'degree mill'.
  • No transparent refund policy for tuition if the program is cancelled or your visa is rejected.
  • Negative reviews from multiple students on independent platforms (not the university's own testimonials).
